The industry summit coordinated by the ANF on 25 February 2015
resulted in several initiatives and actions; it highlighted the lack of
industry wide data. As an industry, we need to be able to gather
data from many sources and use it effectively reflecting a cohesive
Stakeholders and suppliers wants good data, newsagents want
customer data, associations want data to go to government/
policy submissions etc.
We need to establish minimum category performance.
We need to know average and the range of basket sizes.
We need to know the demographic of customers.
Customer info for marketing database is essential.
Suppliers need to review data policies, so newsagents have
information on their consumers.
Good data is a precursor and enabler to good information and that
good information is essential for good knowledge and good business
XchangeIT is working on ways to be able to gather data and has met
with several of the participants to gauge their interest in pursuing the
collection of data. “We constructed a simple two-part proposition for
them,” XchangeIT’s Chris Leach explained;
1. How can we use data to assist newsagents to generate more foot
traffic into their stores, resulting in increased revenue and profit
2. How can we use data to assist suppliers to promote placing the
right products in the right places at the right times, leading to
increased consumer foot traffic, resulting in increased revenue
“Most participants agree with the proposition, but not all seem wholly
committed to contribute to its development. Both top-down and
bottom-up approaches are required to gather data, crunch data and
present data in a meaningful way to address the proposition and
achieve its goal of increased revenue and profit.
“The most sensible visual representation of data is by way of
dashboards which can be designed to help any newsagency look at
their business’s data and identify ways to increase revenue. This is
a localised, contextual facility that utilises data from several sources
– these could be store sales, basket sales and analysis, store traffic,
local demographics, census data, customer database, online sales
data, and similar.
A supplier dashboard could look at similar data, but from a supplier
perspective, and ‘chunked up’ to identify trends and promotion
“XchangeIT continues to speak to industry stakeholders, but it is
clear that this is a longer term proposition; twelve to 24 months;
before lumpy bits of revenue will be generated, so starting earlier
rather than later makes a lot of sense. Costing in more detail also
has to be done and progress reports will be made,” Mr Leach said.
