NRA pushes for extended trading
The ANF QLD is working with the Master Grocers Association
(MGA) to oppose the National Retail Association’s (NRA)
recent move to extend trading hours for all retailers in South
The application has been put forward by the NRA in
conjunction with a formidable group of big businesses, Coles,
Woolworths, Myer, Big W, K-Mart, Target, Scentre Group,
Shopping Centre Council, Evolve and SMART Infrastructure
Facility. The first six of these are members of the NRA
and if this move is successful they will be able to extend
their trading hours to open from 7am until 9pm Monday to
Newsagents know the importance of early morning trade—it
is one of the last competitive advantages small business has
over these giant conglomerates.
The application states that an extension of trading hours will
increase the economy and create 1000 new jobs. This is not
correct, the consumer will not have more money to spend
and self-serve grocery checkouts hardly create more jobs.
The MGA has been successful in convincing some local
government councils to oppose this application. ANF QLD
and its members will continue to oppose this move.
Rise and fall of mX
The free commuter newspaper, mX which launched in
Melbourne in 2001, closed last month. Following overseas
trends of free newspapers which relied on advertising, mX
was initially popular but News Corp Australia cited the rise
of mobile devices as the reason for the decision to close the
Pharmacy and newsagency a good
The local newspaper at Roxy Downs, The Monitor, reports
that an empty shop at the end of Roxby Central is being
converted into an expanded pharmacy and newsagency.
Roxby Downs Pharmacy is owned by the Adelaide-based
Noel Allen Group, which has purchased the Nextra
newsagency business and will be moving it into the new
premises next month.
The Monitor caught up with pharmacy manager Shaun
McGurgan after the site refurbishments began and he said,
being able to expand and keep the newsagency in town was
“As far as business goes, a newsagency and a pharmacy
work quite well together,” he said.
ATM company goes under
A Queensland-based company, OneCash, which manages
ATMs in petrol stations, supermarkets and convenience
stores has been placed into voluntary administration.
The ANF has advised its members not to not sign offers of
replacements or return of machine or feel pressured to sign
anything immediately. Contact your ANF state manager for
advice if you have a OneCash machine in store.
ANF preferred ATM supplier Next Payments is more than
happy to advise/assist if required.
