National Newsagent - November/December 2015
(02) 9978 3400
At the time of going to print in early November we only had a few
comments online on the ANF Member Facebook Group about
your preferences for the future format of National Newsagent;
all were in favour of print and there is no denying that print is
more pleasurable to read. However, the evidence suggests that
Facebook/online is pretty important too.
Here are some comments:
Very hard to measure how much members like the NN in print,
or wish it to continue if there has been a lack of feedback or
engagement. I hear this from a number of committees, local
chamber and associations who are left wondering how many
read the association magazine.
I read everything and welcome the NN.
Keep printing it; emails are easier but it’s too easy just to flick
past an email where I always have a read of the magazine
My vote is to keep printing NN. Lotterywest stopped printing its
Retail Link and now emails In Touch; I very rarely read it. As I go
through my 30 plus emails each day the majority get deleted
with not more than a glance.
I don’t have time to sit looking at computers and digital stuff.
I take my Newsagency News etc home and read when I am
relaxing with a cuppa.
Whilst it is positive news for newsagents that we—and the
general populace—all prefer print, the economics of print is
challenging unless the readers all engage with the advertisers—
where are the ‘eyeballs’ spending their time? Online? Facebook?
A balance of online and print seems like the best solution.
Next year, the magazine (with a new name) will be in print on a
quarterly basis January, April, July and October interspersed with
regular digital updates, online editions and the weekly member
Your subscription to the new format magazine will be offered to
you in January via Gordon and Gotch, who generously distribute
It is the ANF’s intention to communicate with members in a
variety of formats to enable easy access in the shop, at home
and on the move.
We look forward to talking to you and hearing from you in 2016.
Magazine pockets are reducing!
There is no escaping it; there had to be a letter about
magazine supply in this last edition of National Newsagent.
Will it be resolved in 2016?
We opened the Subiaco Square Newsagency almost 16
years ago and at that time we had 1050 magazine pockets.
Over the years, magazine sales have dropped and we have
changed the business to reflect the times. Currently we have
a total of 720 pockets.
Until now I had not informed Network Services of the
reduced number of pockets and we have been receiving
many more titles than we can sell and display. If you look
at our monthly statements you will see I receive credits for
more than half of what I receive.
The last three statement show the following:
In the past I have gone online to cancel magazines that
do not sell, but they get replaced by other titles. I need
to reduce the titles I am receiving, from all magazine
suppliers—not just Network Services. I am happy to allocate
300 magazine pockets to Network Services. How do I go
about doing this?
According to Network’s spreadsheet they supply me with
exactly 400 titles. Now that I have only 720 pockets I need
this to be reduced to around 300 titles. I am happy that I can
go to Netonline and cancel the magazines I wish to cancel.
What I find unacceptable is that they will not acknowledge that
I have less pockets now than I did 16 years ago. So when I do
cancel magazine titles they will send me other titles in their
place. I know this to be true as I have cancelled magazines
online previously. In three months’ time I will get the cancelled
titles back again anyway. It takes time to sit on the computer
and cancel magazines. This time would be better spent
merchandising the shop and selling more magazines.
When I deal with card and gift suppliers there is a
relationship that is mutually beneficial. No such relationship
exists between the magazine companies and newsagents.
