It's so irritating to receive an email
advising you of audit failure when you are
pretty sure you have been doing the right
thing in every instance.
We have received at least two failed
audits and we are absolutely sure our
returns are almost perfect.
• I have had a number of my stores
across the state which have received
failed Network Audit notices and we have
very thorough processes.
• I had one situation where one of my
stores received notice that they had
failed an audit --- none of the stock was
'received' at the depot. Network advised
that the returns had been received
but not scanned in because there was
clear sticky-tape covering the Network
• For this audit result they say I failed
to return a large number of magazines,
which is not the case. It looks to me like
a carton was not scanned when it should
• I returned six Gourmet Travellers in one
bundle but they received 'one'.
• They say I didn't return more than what
they sent me!
• I have had no less than five 'fails' in the
last six to eight weeks. I have actually
gone to manual returns now because I
feel this is the only way I can keep track
of my returns.
• I have been doing my returns for 27
years and have never had as many
hassles as I have in the last couple of
months. I know people make mistakes
but this is a joke.
I don't have any problems with Gotch
or any other company with returns.
NN: There seems to be a problem
with returns audits with many agents
reporting that they have sent the returns
but Network audits say they are not
received or incorrect.
NIALL MURPHY: "It's unfortunate that
we have had to increase the scrutiny
of returns claims. We have invested
in scan-based receiving and auditing
systems into each of our delivery
centres. During audits, via barcode
scanners, we reconcile all stock received
from agents against credits claimed.
Where errors are found, whether in

our favour or the agents', credits are
adjusted. It is absolutely dependent
on the boxes being clearly labelled
not only by agent but by credit claim.
While we will continue to invest and
continually enhance the system the
best advice I can give agents is to ensure
they are aware of the new process
and are following it for each return
Network's David James explained
that the process is new. "No doubt
some agents have adapted better than
others. Where agents are notified of a
discrepancy I encourage them to take a
moment to ensure they are aware of the
process and confirm it is being followed
by their staff. To assist, a simple guide is
available on www.netonline.com.au in the
"From our side we monitor the results
of our state delivery centres. This way we
have identified periods where they are
not correctly scanning all shipments. We
then correct that action.
"Agents who account for their returns
accurately and follow the process
correctly have nothing to be concerned
"I have looked at some of the queries
sent through by the ANF; those I looked
at most are minor errors and more often
than not link back to the process not
being correctly implemented. In these
cases no changes to credits are being
made. Instead the agents are asked to
confirm the process is being followed
correctly in their business."

The email below arrived at 7am this
morning (21 October) from G&G.
I wish to compliment and thank G&G
for sending this timely and important
advice to newsagents. Newsagents
now have around one week and 8 hours
to finalise any returns that we want
included and credited from our October
account. I do not recall ever seeing such
a proactive and helpful message as this
one which can quickly and directly impact
newsagents' cash flow.
My sincere thanks to G&G for this
proactive action which will directly
